About the Structural Engineering Project, June to August 2021

The objective of the project is to develop the Structural Engineering chapter in Engineer-it.  It is sponsored by the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Institution of Engineers in Scotland.  Civil engineering students will be appointed to work on the project during June to August 2021.

Engineer-it is an online learning resource for how to 'engineer' successful outcomes particularly in situations of complex uncertainty - see: https://eit.engineers.scot/  and  About

It is divided into ‘Chapters’, two of which are under development;

The Strategies for engineered outcomes chapter sets out fundamental principles in general terms so that they can be used across the spectrum of activities that require an engineered approach.

The Structural engineering chapter is for learner at all stages of career development in that subject.  It can also be used as reference source for examples of the use of the strategies.  A start on its development was made in 2020 see:  http://stempedia.com/ Some of the Stempedia files have been converted for Engineer-it

Tasks

1.     Create case studies that demonstrate outcomes based on best practice in structural design. Guidance articles for design issues will also be developed. It intended that a footbridge design and an industrial building design will be developed.

2.     Convert the Stempedia files for Engineer-it.

The project will be mainly managed by Iain MacLeod ([[1]])

The structural engineering chapter will not be wiki in the sense that anyone can edit pages but it will follow the Wikipedia principle that all information will be open to editing and updating.

It will not be like a book or a report that is completed and signed off.  It is intended that the 2021 project will establish a framework to support further development.
